Writing During the Holidays

December 21, 2015

Need to keep the kids busy during the holidays…and promote literacy at the same time?

Need to keep the kids busy during the holidays…and promote literacy at the same time? Families can fall into the trap of watching a bit more television, or yearning to be outside though the weather doesn’t permit it. It’s nice to have indoor creative activities, and one option is writing. The holidays, along with reflecting upon the year, bring us so many natural opportunities to put pen (or pencil or crayon!) to paper. So pull out those art supplies and enjoy drawing and writing. Here are some ways to get your child writing this holiday season:

  • Signing or writing Christmas cards to friends, family or teachers.
  • Addressing or decorating envelopes and packages
  • Labeling gifts for people (To & From)
  • Making a list of what they are thankful for
  • Making a wish list for Santa
  • Labeling boxes as you pack-up decorations
  • Writing letters to close friends and family as part of a gift
  • Jotting down goals, hopes and dreams for the upcoming year
