Although we observed Labor Day yesterday, don't let that stop you from talking about this very important holiday. Labor Day is more than just day off for some, a weekend of sales at your favorite store, or even a last travel opportunity before summer ends.
Picture Books About Jobs, Occupations, and Labor
Labor Day is a commemoration of the ongoing history and achievements of the U.S. labor movement, as well as a well-earned recognition of all kinds of workers and the valuable jobs they do. There are great curricular opportunities here, and picture books can help.
We've got books about construction workers.
We've got books about folks who work at night when most everyone is asleep.
We even have a book about how to get a job in the first place!
All work is valid and all workers deserve dignity, safety, and to be compensated for their labor. People who do manual labor, who cook, clean, and harvest the food we eat are vital to who we are as a society, and deserve our full respect. Luckily, we have picture books that can help us give credit where credit is due.
We've got books about janitors and custodians.
Books about farmers and agricultural workers.
And books about the people who make the food we buy and eat.
Finally, without workers organizing for safer work conditions and better treatment, we wouldn't have a Labor Day in the first place. Check out the books in our collection that highlight historical moments central to the labor movement.
