Books for Big Feelings

July 10, 2020

With everything that has happened this year, we all may be feeling some big feelings. Children may need extra help understanding those feelings and learning how to navigate them. Let the children in your care know that their feelings are valid, and that it is ok to feel their emotions. Here are some books to help your little ones name those feelings and find ways to calm when they (or you) may feel overwhelmed.

Dealing with Loss

This tender exploration of loss will resonate with anyone who has experienced hardship or grief: be it the death of a loved one or pet, a friend moving away, or the transition to a new home or family situation.

After Sherman sees something terrible happen, he becomes anxious and then angry, but when a counselor helps him talk about these emotions, he feels better.

Everyone Has Emotions

Using simple text and colorful illustrations this book explains that tough guys have the same feelings as you and I, and that's ok.

Turning Bad Feelings Around

A young child experiences sadness as if it were a visitor, acknowledging the emotion and suggesting activities to do together.

The Pout-Pout Fish believes he only knows how to frown, even though many of his friends suggest ways to change his expression, until one day a fish comes along that shows him otherwise.

Maintaining Mindfulness and Balance

In a world that is sometimes too busy, with too many things going on, My Magic Breath will help steer children into a serene space of mindfulness, self-awareness, and balance.

Readers will explore feelings such as gratitude and love, learn how our breathing can calm our bodies, and discover how remarkable every moment can be when we experience it as fully as possible.
