The Recovering

May 3, 2018

In The Recovering, author Leslie Jamison confronts her own alcoholism with the help of a chorus of famous drinking writers: Raymond Carver, Jean Rhys, Charles Jackson, and Denis Johnson, to name a few.

Here are the books you’re going to want to track down before or after this one:

And of course the Oscar-winning adaptation of The Lost Weekend:

Don't forget poet John Berryman's The Dream Songs and Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, as well as the Jean Rhys biography The Blue Hour:

You’ll also want to check out Blake Bailey, biographer extraordinaire of alcoholic writers including Richard Yates, John Cheever, and Charles Jackson:

And if you want other books like The Recovering, may I suggest the underrated Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget by Sarah Hepola, and the classic Drinking: A Love Story, by Caroline Knapp.

You may also find yourself wanting to re-watch The Shining and listen to some Billie Holiday.
