Happy Thanksgiving!
So the library might be officially closed today, but thanks to the magic of the internet, I can still tell you about my new favorite graphic novel.
The series is called Chew and it’s written by John Layman with art by Rob Guillory. I kept seeing these books coming across my desk in Interlibrary Loan, and being the food nerd that I am, I finally decided to read them.
And I wasn’t disappointed.
The basic premise of the story is that Tony Chu, a cibopath (or someone who gets psychic impressions from food) works for the FDA and solves crimes. Thanks to a virulent outbreak of bird flu, all chicken and other poultry have been outlawed though out the world.
My favorite part of the books is the secret magic chicken known as Poyo. On one of his adventures, Tony came across this illegal cock fighting ring, where this super chicken had decimated any and all opponents. The guy he was working for ends up stealing Poyo right under Tony’s nose, and then the magnificent Poyo pops up in other places over the course of the series. In my best Veruca Salt impression, I told my husband that “I want a Poyo. Now!”
(Totally kidding of course. I’m not a fan of chickens, unless they are trussed up in my cooking pot.)
Here’s the bad news – the library does not have the first two volumes separately. But if you get the Omnivore Edition volume 1, that will cover them. But if you want to see the original graphic novels, I shouldn’t have any trouble getting them through Interlibrary Loan.
I hope you all have/had/are having a lovely Thanksgiving. And if you do plan to go shopping tonight or tomorrow, please behave. I don’t want to have to send Poyo after you.
Happing Chewing…
