Ancestry Library Edition

The Ancestry Library Edition is available from any library computer at all library locations. (Licensing agreements prevent home access to this resource.) The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as:

• One World Tree—this is a computer-generated pedigree database

• PeopleFinder—public records to locate living people
• Filby’s Passenger and Immigration Lists (PILI) and Gale’s City Directories—these databases are owned by Gale Group and are licensed to only Ancestry.com
• Biography & Genealogy Master Index (BGMI)
• Ancestry World Tree and Ancestry Message Boards—these are read-only in ALE. Users cannot upload data, post messages or reply to messages.

Includes the following content:

• ProQuest's Genealogy & Local History Collection
  20,000+ family and local history books, every word searchable.
• U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930
  Includes page images for the entire census, 1790-1930. Census records can be searched by name, place of birth, age, ethnicity and other variables. Head of household index only (except for 1880).
• PERSI
  The PERiodical Source Index is a comprehensive subject index covering more than 6,500 genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800.
• Freedman's Bank Records
  At the close of the Civil War, the Freedman's Savings & Trust Company was the primary bank for America's freed slaves and others from 1865-1874. The Freedman's Bank Records documents more than 105,000 bank depositors and over 480,000 of their dependants and heirs.
• Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files
  Records of 80,000+ individuals who served in the Revolutionary War with contains both genealogical and historical information. Each veteran's file usually contains six or more pages on each veteran and normally includes the veteran's former rank, unit, and period of service, age or date of birth, residence, and sometimes-genealogical information on other family members.

Genealogy and Local History Databases
Includes the following resources:

• Nashville City Cemetery: Grave Search
  Nashville City Cemetery records are provided courtesy of Metro Archives.
• Marriages Recorded in Nashville, 1864-1905
  The Marriage file indexes marriages recorded in Nashville from 1864-1905. The file can be searched by bride or groom name and will retrieve a record listing the names, the date, and a reference to the marriage book and page number where it is recorded. The letter "A" following a name indicates that the individual was African-American.
  Marriage books are kept at the Metro Archives and so are the actual marriage license bonds. You can obtain a certified marriage record copy at the Archives for $4.00. The Archives' collection of marriage records dates from 1789-1981.
• Obituaries in the Tennessean Newspaper, 1964-2002
  The Obituary file contains an index to the obituaries that have appeared in the Tennessean from 1964 through 2002. The index will list the name, date, and a citation to the newspaper in which the obituary appeared. The Main Library owns the newspaper on microfilm, and reader-printers are available. Index of obituaries after 2002 are accessible through the Library Catalog Subject Search.
• Tennessean 1999-
  Most local obituaries since 1999 are available in full-text.
• Nashville Photographs at the Metro Archives, 1940-1976 and Nashville Banner Clippings
  This database provides information about two resources--the Metropolitan Photographer Collection held by the Metro Nashville Archives, and the Nashville Banner Clippings Files, held by the Special Collections Division at the Main library.

  The Photograph File indexes 9,118 photo negatives in the Metropolitan Photographer Collection from 1950-1987. These negatives are stored at the Metro Archives and depict Nashville buildings, streets, people and events. The index will describe the photo and give the date, if known, and the dimensions of the photograph. Copies can be made of these negatives, please discuss your needs with the staff at the Metro Archives.

  The Nashville Banner Clippings consists of biographical and subject clipping files, with the bulk of the collection dating from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Biographical files on several thousand persons constitute almost half of the collection, with the rest in subject files sorted primarily into three main series: Nashville, Davidson County, and Tennessee. Search the database by keyword to determine if there is a clipping file on that topic. Results that are part of this collection will be labeled "Banner Archives" and will include a record number. This record number helps staff retrieve the files. These files may be accessed in the Nashville Room.
