Reading & Book Lists: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957) wrote the 8 Little House books between 1932 and 1943; On the Way Home, taken from Laura's journal with additional material by her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, and The First Four Years, an early draft of a ninth book, were published after her death.

Wanting to record her family's history, Laura began writing down Pa's stories on a blue-lined tablet, then worked with Rose to shape the book that became Little House in the Big Woods. She received as many as fifty letters a day, and took the time to respond to each child who wrote. She welcomed fans into her home - even those who knocked at 7:00 in the morning!

The Times Literary Supplement noted in 1962 that "[u]nlike most books about childhood...the troubles and joys of Laura's daily life are of a kind and on a scale that any child can appreciate. And yet...an adult will all the time be aware of the parents' tensions too."
